What are the 4 Cs of diamonds?
The 4 Cs of diamonds are cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. Together, these four characteristics are used to describe and evaluate the quality and appearance of a diamond.
Understanding the 4 Cs is important because two diamonds that look similar at first glance can have very different prices. A small difference in cut quality, colour grade, clarity or carat weight can significantly affect both the appearance of the stone and its value.
The four characteristics work together rather than independently. A larger diamond with poor proportions may appear less attractive than a smaller diamond with excellent light performance. Similarly, paying for an extremely high clarity grade may not create a visible difference if a lower-grade diamond is already eye-clean.
Diamond cut: the factor that controls brilliance
Diamond cut is often confused with diamond shape. They are not the same thing.
A round, oval, emerald or princess diamond describes the shape of the stone. Cut describes how well the diamond has been proportioned, faceted and polished.
The proportions of a diamond determine how light enters the stone, reflects internally and returns to the viewer's eye. When the proportions are well balanced, the diamond can produce strong brightness, fire and scintillation.

Diamond clarity: understanding inclusions and blemishes
Diamond clarity describes the internal characteristics and external features present in a diamond.
Internal characteristics are known as inclusions, while surface characteristics are known as blemishes. These features can form naturally during diamond growth or result from the cutting and finishing process.
Clarity is generally assessed using magnification, which means that many characteristics recorded on a grading report may not be visible to the unaided eye.

What does eye-clean mean?
The term eye-clean is commonly used to describe a diamond whose inclusions are not easily visible without magnification.
This can be important when choosing clarity because the difference between two grades may be obvious under a loupe but impossible to see when the diamond is worn.
The visibility of an inclusion depends on several factors:
- Size of the inclusion
- Location within the diamond
